Music and Memory

Enjoyment of music is wonderful therapy for anyone, for people with Alzheimer’s and other short-term memory loss music has a powerful ‘unlocking’ effect, enhancing motivation and current levels of function.

Many times we hear ‘it’s miraculous’ as our members perform and share their abilities. The memory for song is preserved deep in the brain and we can use it to access other memories - our music sessions are full of reminiscence and laughter.

Music and Self-Esteem

The most rewarding aspect of music is the sense of achievement a performance or rehearsal brings - demonstrating our skills, working together and entertaining others.

Regular participation in a choir or glee club gives our members an outlet for their creative abilities and enhances confidence and well-being. And it’s fun!

 Music and Love

There is a special role for music in sickness and end of life care - to share someone’s favourite hymns and songs as an expression of love and support brings great strength and comfort to patients, carers and families.

This is a time for being in the moment, music helps to focus that in a very positive way.
